(CSULA – UT) CSULA got off to a quick start in the opening season game on Monday but were unable to bring home the win from Scolinos field in Pomona. The Golden Eagles took a 4-1 lead into the 6th inning, but they gave up 6 runs over the next 3 innings including 3 in the 8th with the score tied at 4 and lost 7-4. CSULA (0-1) had 10 hits but left 10 runners on base and did not score again in the final 5 innings.
Starting pitcher Wally Goodline did well for the Golden Eagles. He pitched 5 strong innings as he gave up 1 run on 5 hits. Only giving up a single run in the third he struck out two players and walked one. Nathan Pickett came out of the bullpen for the Golden Eagles in the 6th inning. He gave up 4 earned runs and 8 hits over the next 2 1/3 innings to Cal Poly Pomona.
Keith Powers picked up the win for Cal Poly Pomona as he retired the only batter he faced to end the 8th. Joshua Krist earned the save with a hitless 9th inning and a pair of strikeouts. This game was a non-conference game against a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponent. The Golden Eagles will face Cal State San Bernardino, another CCAA opponent in their next game.
