Tuesday evening, a healing memorial service was held on the CSULA campus for Latin American Studies Graduate student Claudia Baltazar. She, passed away while writing her thesis, on December 19, 2009.  Family, friends, student peers, and professors gathered in the quad area of King Hall to remember the 26 six-year-old  4.0 student, who was remembered as “warm and smiling”. The Women’s Indian group “In Lak Ech” performed in her honor. A procession was held after the performance to the fourth floor offices of the Latin American Studies program were she spent much of her time discussing her thesis.  Claudia Baltazar will be the first CSULA student to be honored with an MA.


CSULA Sociology student, Gloria Daniela Lopez, 26, was killed at the beginning of September in Ambato, Ecuador.  On September 9, the day before her return to Los Angeles and fall quarter,she was abducted, raped, and murdered. Her naked body was left under a tree by the side of the road, one mile away from where she was staying.
